In the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request that The Food Empowerment Project recently filed with the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on behalf of the Rabbit Advocacy Network (RAN), we found a number of unsettling pieces of information regarding what happens to the rabbits whom Iowa Rabbit, LLC, which provides rabbit meat to Whole Foods, kills.

That report, which dates from January 1, 2014, when operations at that Iowa Rabbit’s slaughterhouse began, through July 22, doesn’t show how many rabbits were intentionally killed during that period (because the company argues that that number is “proprietary information), but it does show how many rabbits either died during transport on their way to the slaughterhouse, died while awaiting slaughter at the slaughterhouse, or were condemned because they were too sick to kill.

During three short months, Whole Foods’ rigorous animal welfare standards resulted in the unintended deaths of 88 rabbits at Iowa LLC.

Apparently, Whole Foods interprets “humane” very differently than we do.
