In 2013, thanks to a letter writing and phone call campaign by San Diego House Rabbit Society (SDHRS), natural foods market Sprouts ended their sale of rabbit meat with the following email sent to SDHRS co-manager Judith Pierce:
Dear Judith –
Thank you for taking the time to write. Out of the utmost respect and care for our customers, Sprouts is voluntarily discontinuing its sales of rabbit meat. While it’s important to remember there are no food safety concerns with rabbit products, this decision was made to ensure our customers are confident and comfortable when shopping in our stores.

Since that time, no Sprouts stores have sold rabbit meat, until this week when we found out that one of two independently owned stores, the Eastlake (in San Diego) store, was selling it. Amy Spintman, from SDHRS, contacted the Sprouts Eastlake store, and immediately asked them to honor the Sprouts national policy. While their first reaction, on January 4, was to say that the store was privately owned, and thus did not have to follow the national policy, after receiving multiple phone calls from RAN supporters and rabbit lovers everywhere, they changed their policy with the following response that they have been sending out:
We are thrilled with Sprouts Eastlake and Chula Vista’s quick and humane response, and ask that our supporters take the time to send a thank you to the store, and to be sure to shop at Sprouts if they live in a community with a Sprouts store.
